Asset Browser

Asset Browser (left area) lists the named assets in your project's asset registry and opens each one in its editor. Open it with View > Asset Browser or Assets on the Project overview. It is available once the registry loads.

Asset Browser is for browsing. To change an asset, use Inspector, the asset's editor, or the registry file in Source Editor. The registry format is described in Asset registry.

The tree

Images, sounds, files and actors are grouped by the folders in their path; fonts by their package or atlas folder. Materials, animations and shaders are grouped under Materials, Animations and Shaders. Each row shows the asset name, its kind and what it refers to.

ControlAction
FilterSearches asset names, kinds and paths (case ignored).
Collapse AllClears the filter and collapses everything.
Click a folderExpand or collapse it.
Click an assetSelect it (Inspector shows its fields) and open it (below).
Open DefinitionOpens the registry file at that asset in Source Editor.

Selecting an asset elsewhere, for example in Scene View, reveals it in the tree.

When the registry has problems

If the registry is missing, outside the project folder or cannot be read, Asset Browser is unavailable and Output says why. If you edit the registry into an invalid state, the tree keeps showing the last valid version and the summary reads Stale assets until you fix it.

Limits

  • Not implemented: adding, renaming or removing assets from the tree; thumbnails; dragging assets into fields. Edit the registry in Source Editor or Inspector. New effects are created in the Effect Editor.
