Desktop builds are made for the system you build on. To make a Windows build, build on Windows; to make a Linux build, build on Linux. Web builds can be made on either. A target whose platform names the other system fails with build target platform does not match this host.

What players need

Windows

  • 64-bit Windows on an x64 CPU with AVX2 (most CPUs since about 2013–2015).
  • A graphics driver with OpenGL 4.3.
  • Nothing else to install. The game uses only DLLs that come with Windows.
  • A writable temporary folder (%TEMP%). The game unpacks its files there each time it starts and removes them when it exits.

Linux

  • 64-bit Linux on an x64 CPU with AVX2.
  • An X11 desktop. Wayland desktops work through XWayland, which most provide.
  • A graphics driver with OpenGL 4.3.
  • These system libraries, which most desktop distributions already have: OpenGL (libGL), X11 (libX11, libXi, libXcursor), ALSA sound (libasound), libpng and zlib. If your copy of cTurtle was built with liburing, the game needs liburing too.
  • A writable temporary folder ($TMPDIR, usually /tmp). The game unpacks its files there each time it starts and removes them when it exits.

On Linux the executable has no embedded icon; that is normal for Linux programs.

Web

  • A browser with WebGL 2, WebAssembly threads and SharedArrayBuffer.
  • About 768 MiB of memory, which the game reserves when it starts.
  • The page must be served with two special headers over HTTPS (or from localhost). That is your job when hosting, not the player's; see Web.

macOS

Not supported. macOS only provides OpenGL 4.1, and cTurtle needs OpenGL 4.3. Studio still lists macOS as a platform, but builds for it do not run.

Direct3D, Vulkan, Metal and WebGPU are Not implemented.

If your copy of cTurtle was built on Linux without the ALSA development package installed, every game built with it is silent. See What you need installed.
